Burgers, Chicken and Southern Sides: Rooster’s

Roosters burger and onion rings.

Since 1984, Rooster’s in Fondren has been serving the Jackson community with their succulent burgers, country fried steaks, red beans & rice and other Southern favorites. The restaurant family, which also includes Basil’s, has taken old, historic properties in Jackson and turned them into hip, local dining experiences, with Rooster’s being a favorite to locals and tourists.

Each of their burgers come on your choice of white, wheat or jalapeno cheddar buns that are baked fresh daily. Once you pick your bun, choose from burgers like the classic hamburger or cheeseburger, bacon cheeseburger, mushroom Swiss burger, nacho burger or the stupid burger – a Rooster’s favorite.

If you’d rather a chicken sandwich, choose from a grilled or fried chicken sandwich, chicken club, chicken mushroom Swiss or chicken jalapeno sandwich. All sandwiches are topped with fresh lettuce, tomato, pickle and onions.

Other chicken dishes – dubbed #JXNCKN – on the menu range from the mushroom chicken cutlet, classic chicken tenders, smothered chicken and grits, hot, hot fried chicken sandwich, fried chicken club and tomato cutlet, a pan-broiled chicken breast topped with Rooster’s famous tomato gravy. Several chicken dishes come served with your choice of two sides – curly fries, onion rings, side salad, coleslaw, mashed potatoes, red beans and rice, cheese grits, green beans, baked beans, rice and gravy or mac and cheese.

If you’re looking for something a little different, opt for any of the plate lunches and dinners. Options include hamburger steak, country fried steak, creole hamburger steak, or red beans and rice.

On the lighter side, choose from a fried or grilled chicken salad, house salad, fried or grilled chicken Caesar salad or the Devil’s Caesar salad, the “hot, hot” version of the fried chicken Caesar salad.

No Southern meal is complete without a dessert, so be sure to get yourself a serving of Rooster’s banana pudding or their chocolate chip cookies, both housemade, both equally delicious.

No matter what you’re in the mood for at lunch or dinner, Rooster’s provides excellent, fresh, homemade food in a quaint environment in the heart of Fondren. Be sure to check them out next time you find yourself in the neighborhood at 2906 North State Street. glennfoods.com
