The Restaurant: “Mississippi-style pizza at its finest in Jackson, Mississippi” is how Pizza Shack describes its restaurant and its reputation. For the past 12 years, Pizza Shack has proven to be a contributor to the culinary and culture scene in the Jackson community. Now with three locations, Pizza Shack continues to experience growth and provide great pizza with one-of-a-kind specialty topping combinations. Its Fortification Street location, which was once a cleaners, is counter service with indoor and outdoor side patio seating available. It is a groovy pizza joint which celebrates and elevates the uniqueness and creativity in our Jackson community – and in its menu offerings.
The Atmosphere: Pizza Shack is quite proud – and deservedly so – of their reputation for Best Pizza in Jackson. The walls and counter are adorned with the many honors and awards they’ve received over the years. When I arrived, I was met by very welcoming and friendly staff. While I waited, I had an opportunity to chat with Charles Butler, of Drummer’s World 3000, a community-based percussion skills development hub for youth in particular hosts. Charles was setting up for Pizza Shack’s Human Karaoke, where customers can play the drums and other instruments irregardless of skill set, during happy hour each day from 5-7 pm. Patronage was a busy Friday mix of casual diners and to-go pick up orders.
The Menu, the Food & the Service: Pizza Shack is known for its elaborate pizza topping combinations and ingredients piled high in true Mississippi fashion. They also have great sandwiches, salads, and a diverse variety of appetizers available. However, I opted for a custom pizza with my choice of toppings and their delicious traditional crust. How did I like my Mississippi pie? With one half pineapples and the other pineapples and mushrooms. I also ordered a sampling of the Spicy Thai and Lemon Pepper wings to give their wings a test run. I had a special request to make my pizza well-done, for added crispy flaky goodness. It was a winning selection on all accounts. The lemon pepper wings had the perfect measure of sauce and zesty glaze, while the spicy Thai wings had a much saucier consistency, bursting with robust combination of spices to give the right amount of savory kick to my wings. In addition to achieving “go-to” status for all things pizza, it will now be my spot for a quick wing order.
If I ever had any doubts about Pizza Shack’s claim to pizza fame, all doubts were settled. The service was just as great as the food and I’ll certainly be back for more intriguing conversations with Mr. Butler about the needs of our youth and the importance of the arts while partaking in arguably, the best pizza in Mississippi. Who knows, you may catch me on the drums for human karaoke one evening in the very near future. To learn more about Pizza Shack and its menu offerings, check out their website at www.pizzashack.ms.
