Cool Off With Sweet Treats in Jxn

by Rebecca Fending

As summer drags on, a sweet, chilled treat is irresistible.

From classics like a snoball or soda shop sundae to fro-yo, the City With Soul is a cool sort of place to be during the hottest time of the year.

Fondren Fro-Yo

Fondren Fro-Yo – 2951 Old Canton Road

With a 10-flavor lineup that changes often, you’re sure to find a flavor you love at this Fondren shop, but get it before it’s gone!

Choose from Tahitian Vanilla, Triple Chocolate or even Valencia Orange, and top your cup with anything you want. Toppings include a variety of fresh fruit like blackberries or cherries, nuts, syrups and gooey sauces or sweet toppings like brownie chunks, cookie dough pieces, candy, Fruity Pebbles cereal or even Gushers candies.

Because the yogurt flavors rotate, be sure to check the listed options on WaitrApp.com or call (601) 368-9755 if you’re looking for a specific tasty treat.

Nandy’s Candy. Image: Creative Process

Nandy’s Candy – 1220 East Northside Drive (Maywood Mart)

This nostalgic candy shop is a favorite for visitors and locals year-round, especially during the warmer months. During the summer, Nandy’s Candy serves up snoballs with nearly any syrup or combination you can think of. The shop features traditional flavors like cherry, lemon, lime and blue raspberry. Opt for the coffee, cookie dough, White Russian, or even wedding cake flavors if you’re feeling adventurous.

You can also make your own flavor combinations, crafting a snoball that’s perfectly designed for your taste. Shop originator Nancy King’s favorite? Half King Cake flavored syrup with half fruit flavor like lemon or strawberry.

Visit nandys-candy.myshopify.com/collections/snoballs for a complete list of snoball flavors.

Brent’s Drugs

Brent’s Drugs – 655 Duling Avenue

Talk about true nostalgia: the soda fountain at Brent’s Drugs has served the Fondren neighborhood since 1946. It currently offers classics such as chocolate, strawberry or vanilla milkshakes, banana splits, fresh-squeezed lemonade, limeade or orangeade and fountain drinks.

If you’re looking to try a custom milkshake, Brent’s has rotating flavors on the menu. For the chocolate lover, the Nutella milkshake mixes the rich hazelnut spread with their vanilla ice cream. If you’re looking for something different, opt for the Ginger Finger, made with Butterfinger candy pieces, ginger syrup and vanilla ice cream.

If you’d rather indulge in a sundae served in a classic dish, the Cookie Monster sundae is perfect: cookies and cream ice cream topped with hot fudge, Oreo cookie crumbles, graham cracker pieces, whipped cream and a cherry on top.

Bop’s

Bop’s Frozen Custard – 1173 East County Line Road

Specializing in “old-fashioned ice cream,” Bop’s serves up many different cool treats made with their freshly made egg custard. Menu items include sundaes, concretes, shakes and specialty items such as their best-selling Snappy Turtle treat—vanilla custard layered with hot fudge, caramel and roasted pecans.

You can also build your own treat catered to your craving, whether it’s a sundae, concrete, shake or malt. Choose from custard or frozen yogurt and add all the mix-ins and toppings you desire.

La Brioche

La Brioche Patisserie – 1200 Eastover Drive (Cultivation Food Hall)

Typically known for its French pastries and desserts, La Brioche also offers housemade gelato, perfect for a sweltering summer day. The creamy treat is made in a variety of eight rotating flavors, including fresh strawberry, mango, chocolate and coffee.

La Brioche’s gelato is available in four-ounce, six-ounce or pint-sized servings. You can also add any scoop to any crepe!

You can also try a traditional Italian treat, affogato, a fresh, rich espresso poured over a scoop of gelato.

Sal & Mookie’s

Sal & Mookie’s – 200 District Boulevard East (The District at Eastover)

When it comes to sweet treats at cool temps, Sal & Mookie’s is a mecca of flavor, all available when you dine inside or at the walk-up window outside.

Italian-style sodas are a perfect sipping treat on a hot afternoon. Flavors include the popular Creamsicle, made with orange and vanilla Torani syrup, creamy half and half and topped with club soda.

Sal & Mookie’s also offers malts, floats and hand-spun shakes. If you’re looking for a truly indulgent treat, try one of the Extreme Shakes like the Campfire Shake, made with chocolate ice cream, marshmallow fluff, graham crackers and topped with toasted mallows, chocolate bark and graham crackers. Or opt for a Cereal Box Shake such as the Lucky Charms shake – birthday cake ice cream blended with Lucky Charms cereal and a strawberry on top.

Sal & Mookie’s also has classic ice cream by the scoop, as well as sundaes and splits.
