Bravo’s New Orleans Style Shrimp and Grits

Mississippi enjoys being the epicenter of all things southern and delicious, with food inspirations from our coastal elements making its way across our state. Another benefit to our location is our proximity to New Orleans and its culinary influences. One dish that comes to mind that we have nearly adopted as our own with a twist is the infamous Shrimp and Grits. Let’s face it, in the south, there are endless variations of this flavorful and filling signature southern dish. There’s the New Orleans style shrimp and grits, then there’s Bravo’s New Orleans Style Shrimp and Grits. This dish from BRAVO! Italian Restaurant & Bar is in a league of its own when it comes to the various splendid ingredients combined to create the dish. If there were a gumbo equivalent based on the ingredients alone, this is it.

It comes with truffle polenta topped with a robust base blend of corn, grape tomatoes, andouille sausage, peppers and onions, and of course – shrimp. But don’t fret, the truffle is subtle. At the very first bite, you get the heartiness and bold flavor of New Orleans cuisine loaded with sausage. The hints of Cajun spice and truffles are prevalent but subdued. Taken together, the Italian marries with the Creole cuisine quite nicely leaving a signature brunch dish at BRAVO! that is bursting with flavor and full of meaty goodness with every bite. The succulent shrimps on top aren’t too shabby either.

While this dish has origins in the Carolinas and along the coastal south, it wasn’t born in a culinary kitchen. Rather, it was created by fishermen at sea as a standard breakfast of choice when they had very few options. The simple combination of the protein they had available (shrimp) and the plentiful southern staple (grits) made for a sustaining breakfast meal. Fast forward nearly fifty years later and this is a popular brunch, lunch, and dinner entrée available in most restaurants throughout the south today. At BRAVO! you will find a Shrimp and Grits entrée unlike most in Jackson. It’s in a league of its own in presentation, preparation, and palatability.
