Jackson Foodie Dish of the Week: Healthy Wraps and Smoothies

Spring Break means a couple of things things: swimsuits, sandals, and smoothies. For this girl, it’s definitely smoothies and sandals. If you’ve been working to perfect your summer look, spring is a good time to reset your goals and kick it in to gear. What better way to do that than to explore some healthy, nutritious, and delicious food options in the city?

I set out to find a local spot for made-to-order fresh fruit smoothies and I didn’t have to look very far. Bottoms Up Fresh Fruit Smoothie Bar, located in the retail section of the Jackson Medical Mall was at the top of my list. Located on the south west entrance of the mall, you will find that they aren’t just good for a great smoothie, but they offer breakfast and lunch items, too! Sameerah’s Healthy Kiosk houses the Smoothie Bar and the hot food items, as well.

What luck I struck, and it’s not even St. Paddy’s Day! I ordered the traditional green smoothie and the chicken and shrimp sandwich.  This was no traditional sandwich, however. It comes on a homemade flatbread, sauteed with Sameerah’s special blend of seasonings and sauces, and garnished with leafy green lettuce, tomato, cucumber, and shredded carrots. The side included a medley of sauteed vegetables, including cabbage, peppers, onions, zucchini, squash, and carrots. When I was younger, my mother spoke often about eating your colors for good health. If any of that rang true, I definitely ate my colors today, and they were fresh and deliciously prepared.

Now, my original plan was to take the smoothie with me to sip casually during the remainder of my work day. But when it arrived, I could smell the fresh fruit goodness and went diving to the bottom of the cup. It consists of your choice of fresh fruits and kale. I added a little sunshine to mine with mango and pineapple and let me just say, kale never tasted so good.

In search of a delicious and healthy foodie destination? Head over to Sameerah’s Healthy Kiosk Monday through Friday 8 am – 4 pm. Let’s eat our colors and drink our kale, good people!
