Broadstreet Bakery: The King of Bakeries

The Restaurant: Broadstreet Bakery is located inside Banner Hall on “the Hill” on I-55 Frontage Road South. If you’re familiar with Jeff Good and Dan Blumenthal, then you definitely know this flagship restaurant for its freshly baked breads, pastries, and delicious sandwiches. The bakery has indoor and outdoor patio dining options available, with counter service for placing orders. The staff is friendly and their hospitality is exceptional. Co-owner Jeff Good recently referred to his team’s brand of service as radical hospitality. I couldn’t agree more. It is hard to surpass this crew on service, whether your order is to go or you plan to sit and visit for a while.

The Broadstreet Way:  Over the years, Broadstreet has made a name for itself in the King Cake world, and it was already the reputable King of Fresh Breads in Jackson. Each sports season, you can count on Broadstreet offering one of a kind sugary baked treats to show your edible school spirit. You can purchase their fresh baked loaves of bread to enjoy at home – at your convenience. Broadstreet also has a concise and consistent menu for breakfast, lunch, or dinner. If you’re a student or you have a membership at the Jackson Zoo, you can enjoy a discount on your meal purchases. Lastly, kids eat free on Saturday nights.

The Food: Broadstreet has staple sandwich combinations as well as delicious entrée items to choose from. I recently dined with my daughter for dinner, where I enjoyed my 15% discount due to our Jackson Zoo membership. I usually get the basil pesto chicken salad sandwich, but this time I decided to try the Smoked Chicken BLT instead. I paired my BLT with a cup of gumbo and decided to go with fresh baked focaccia as my bread of choice. This sandwich consists of smoked chicken breast, Texas smoked bacon, roasted garlic mayo (yum yum), and topped with lettuce and tomato.

When my sandwich was delivered to my table, my eyes gazed at the goodness piled mile high and I could smell the garlic in my sandwich (yum). The lettuce and tomato were crisp, the mayo was perfect, and the smoked chicken breast was what I expected from a quality deli cut. I will say, it could have been just a tad more moist. But, that’s a matter of personal preference. Next time I order, I’ll be sure to get an extra side of that roasted garlic mayo. The focaccia bread was fresh and delicious, as always. The gumbo is good for a bakery, I’d say. It’s a simple gumbo blend, with chicken, sausage, tomato, onion, etc. It had a slight kick, but not too much. I’ll be adding the Smoked Chicken BLT into my faithful sandwich ordering rotation at Broadstreet from now on.

While I was there, I noticed a sign that indicated burgers were now available every day. Needless to say, I’ll be back to give their burger a run soon, too. For those King Cake lovers in Jackson and beyond, you’d be delighted to know they now carry their signature king cakes year round.
