If you are a local and someone mentions red beans and rice, your mind immediately goes to Hal & Mal’s, a downtown Jackson staple and iconic restaurant offering a mashup of creole and southern cuisine, great music, and culture.
One day, I set out for a good bowl of red beans and rice and my first stop was where the awards have decorated the walls for years – Hal & Mal’s. Opting for the full serving instead of the half, I added the additional andouille sausage. This time, I forewent the additional garnishments such as chopped onion and jalapenos. One bite of the red beans and I was convinced it had enough heat for a Mississippi summer already. The dish packed a spicy punch, but it was flavorful and delicious all in the same. The bed of rice was cooked to perfection and red beans had that New Orleans style hearty consistency. It came with a piece of French bread which I shamelessly used to push the last bit of morsels onto my fork, savoring all of the flavor down to the bottom of the bowl.
I’ve had several red beans and rice dishes over time, and I’ve been to many festivals with competitions. I know why Hal & Mal’s has earned and held the title of “Award Winning” Red Beans & Rice over the years. That consistency and quality can’t be beat.
